About AMA Cannabis Task Force

At the 2019 Annual Meeting, the AMA House of Delegates adopted Alternate Resolution 913 as amended in lieu original Resolution 913, “Public Health Impacts and Unintended Consequences of Legalization and Decriminalization of Cannabis for Medicinal and Recreational Use” submitted by the Young Physicians Section and original Resolution 919, “Raising Awareness of the Health Impact of Cannabis,” as summited by the American Thoracic Society. The primary AMA Policy Directive outlines the corresponding charge to this Task Force as follows:

“Our AMA create a Cannabis Task Force to evaluate and disseminate relevant scientific evidence to health care providers and the public.”

Given this charge, this Federation-based task force should focus on reviewing the available scientific evidence published subsequent to the 2017 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report on the health effects of cannabis, synthesizing the information, and making it available, possibly through the development of an educational module for health care providers, which includes patient resources.

While this policy outlines the initial charge, it does not necessarily confine, or prohibit the task force from taking on issues that are identified as important given the current environment (i.e., the public health impacts of legalization).

The AMA is in the process of inviting members to join the Cannabis Task Force.
